I absolutely love Family Guy. Who wouldn’t love a show cram-packed with hundreds of fragmented jokes mixed into a bizarre storyline, and sprinkled with just enough perversion to tantalize the kid in all of us? It’s a recipe for hilarity! And now you can play along with the Griffins\' brand-new escapades, courtesy of the second series in a new line of action figures brought to you by Mezco Toys.
With most of the Griffins completed for the first series, this second series branches out into more interesting variants of the family and their more colorful supporting cast. We get the classic perverted neighbor Quagmire, octopus Stewie (from the Y2K episode) with ink-squirting action, naked Peter Griffin, the bass-playing Rufus Griffin from Billy Bob and the Nocturnal Emissions, Meg Griffin... and of course, everyone’s favorite kegger buddy and hit-and-run perpetrator, Death.
Rufus Griffin, with his gigantic afro, has to be the most obscure figure in the collection, but a welcomed one. He comes from one of the many deluded flashbacks of Peter\'s rich, colorful family lineage. Mezco could make a whole line of these figures.
The sculpting on all of the figures is great across the board, and does a really great job capturing the simple, two-dimensional source material. The paint application really accentuates the finer details of the sculpture with a fine, even spray of shadowed tone. Meticulous details like these are rarely seen on animated figures with simple color schemes, and really adds to fine details in the sculpt (like Peter’s man-boobs and gigantic, bloated belly, which mercifully hangs over his tiny rock worm).
Speaking of that Buddha belly, if you look hard enough you can just make out a little smiley face winking at you from within the beer guzzler\'s crevice. Rumor has it that if you tickle it enough, Peter will giggle like the Pillsbury Doughboy. Not that I would ever do such a thing.
Once again, the accessories really make these figures shine. From simple, extra touches-- like Meg’s glasses having plastic lenses and Peter’s pillow actually being squishy-- to practically extra figures being thrown in-- like Death’s hooded dog and Stewie’s hoard of miscreant offspring. It just further emphasizes Mezco’s dedication to going that extra mile. However, the mother-of-all accessories comes with Quagmire. He actually comes with a blow-up, plug-in sex doll. I can’t believe I actually lived long enough to see an action figure pack like this.
As I gleefully write this last passage, with \"Oh beautiful, for spacious skies…\" playing triumphantly in my head, I realize it is a great time to be not only a toy collector... but also an American.
