For all the power that movies have to enhance your mood and fix whatever ails you, there are only a handful that can make you fall in love. Romantic movies have gotten a bad rap from all the guys that have been dragged to too many Hugh Grant flicks. Luckily for you Freak Film fans, I have a little treasure that is not only a great movie, but is almost guaranteed to jump-start a new relationship: The Fisher King.
With stellar leads by a pre-\"Dude\" Jeff Bridges and a post-\"Mork\" Robin Williams, The Fisher King is a wacky, romantic, poignant, and fantastic story of redemption and fate. There are great female characters that will melt the heart of your soon-to-be girlfriend, like the strong but under-appreciated Anne (played by the brilliant Mercedes Ruehl), the awkward Lydia (Amanda Plummer), and-- technically, he\'s not female-- Michael Jeter is unforgettable as a mustachioed drag queen who delivers singing telegrams.
The story, in a nutshell, is that a homeless man searches for the Holy Grail. Whenever he starts to remember his former life, a red knight engulfed in flames appears to torment him. The only man that can help in both his quest for the Grail and to woo the woman he secretly loves is a former shock-jock radio DJ, who soon discovers that their quest for the Grail is the only thing that can heal the tragedy that links them together. There are gangs of homeless knights, mental patients that sing, a ballet in Grand Central Station, and all the visuals that let you know without a doubt that this is a Terry Gilliam film.
Can I guarantee this movie is a love affair waiting to happen in every viewing? No. I do believe, however, that you will fall in love with this movie if there is a romantic bone in your body. Is The Fisher King an aphrodisiac that will melt every woman you encounter? I couldn’t tell you. I only know that the love affair that spawned from watching this movie years ago with a wonderful woman named Shelly made this film so sacred that I could never watch it with anyone else. It speaks to me of true love and redemption, of fantasy and romance-- but most of all, of possibility.
