PRINT ISSUE #7: BRIAN AND ANTON CURLEY
A FEW MONTHS AGO, I POSTED SOME PICTURES I TOOK WHILE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS. ANTON CURLEY EMAILED ME TO TELL ME ONE OF THE PICTURES WAS AN ANTI-BUSH STICKER THAT HIS FATHER, BRIAN CURLEY, MADE. WE STARTED TALKING, AND NEXT THING I KNOW, I\'M INTERVIEWING ONE OF MY FAVORITE NEW AMERICAN FAMILIES. READ ON TO SEE WHAT AMAZING STORIES YOU HEAR WHEN YOU START TALKING TO STRANGERS.
PART ONE: ANTON CURLEY
Vinnie Baggadonuts: I guess I should say, just so people know, you emailed me because I had a photo of a poster of your dad’s on my website. Can you describe the poster a little bit?
Anton Curley: Well, it had a very high-contrast picture of President Bush. At the top, it said \"I suck\", and at the bottom it said \"Fuck Bush\".
Both: (laugh)
VB: What was your reaction when you saw it on my site?
AC: I pretty much flipped. I was amazed it got on there! When I first heard that you went to Texas, I figured I’d see some pictures of things I’d recognize every day, but not this!
VB: Well, the reason I wanted to interview you was, as the poster proves, you obviously don’t have a run-of-the-mill dad. And I would think if your dad’s making posters like this and putting them out in public, you probably have a pretty interesting home environment.
AC: (laughs) Yeah. My life growing up has been very different from most kids. Both of my parents used to be in bands. Oftentimes, when I was very young, I’d go to sleep with my dad’s band practicing in the other room.
VB: Would you say your childhood was good, then, with all these different things happening?
AC: I believe so. I have some funny tales other people would never be able to truthfully tell.
VB: Like what?
AC: Well, one of my earliest memories is my dad and I going to pick up the girls from L7 because their van had broken down.
VB: You had no idea who they were at the time?
AC: No. I was clueless. But when I look back on it now, it’s kind of a shock.
Both: (laugh)
VB: Do you remember the point when you realized your household was different than other kids’ households?
AC: Kind of early on, particularly when I started going to school. I was raised vegetarian. I’ve never eaten meat my entire life because my parents became vegetarian before I was born. Plus, the name \"Anton\" seemed to be kind of strange to people all through school.
VB: Really?
AC: Yeah. People would mispronounce it, or say it as if they were unsure how to.
VB: You yourself are an artist. You do some poster work and are in bands. Tell me about that stuff.
AC: Well, because I grew up around music, it just sort of came naturally. At first, I tried to play drums. But after a while, I migrated towards the bass. I’ve played that for about six years now. About a year ago, I went back to drums, so now I play both. I’m also attempting to play the banjo. And one of bands I’m currently in is my parents’ reunited band: The Delinquents.
VB: Whoa! So, all three of you play in it?
AC: Yep. I play bass, my dad plays rhythm guitar, and my mom plays keyboard.
