Let\'s get right to it! This is part three of me bringing you new shit! (See the past two Panels for details.)
KARMA INCORPORATED #1 (Viper Comics)
Written by David Hopkins / Illustrated by Tom Kurzanski, colored by Marlena Hall
Think Dirty Work meets \"not at all funny\". Supposedly, this is the story of a kind of revenge-for-hire company. However, we aren’t regaled with tales of their hilarious and cruel deeds. We get to see the covert-type team of Karma Inc.’s employees complaining about how they don’t like their jobs anymore. The art is also a miss for me. I’ve never really been a fan of the edgy-cartoonish super-distorto style, so this book was tough even just to sit through.
Does it make me want to pick up the next issue? No.
HERO SQUARED #1 (Boom Studios)
Written by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis / Illustrated by Joe Abraham, colored by Matt Nelson
Milo is a slacker film student. The Milo from an alternate reality, Captain Valor, is a superhero. Milo\'s girlfriend, Stephie, is patient and understanding. The alternate reality Stephie, Caliginous (Look it up!), is a psychotic supervillain who destroyed Captain Valor’s planet, and has now followed him here. This book is trying hard to be funny, but for some reason the jokes just don’t seem to flow right. I don’t know if it’s the fact that beneath Milo’s smart-aleck demeanor you can tell he’s a sad pathetic loser, or that some of the \"jive\" dialogue occasionally seems forced. Joe Abraham does a good job with the art, but the only thing I don’t like about it is that the inking seems spotty in places. It’s probably a stylistic thing, but I’m not fond of it.
Does it make me want to pick up the next issue? I’ll give it one more chance, but if it doesn’t pick up soon, consider it dropped.
SILENT DRAGON #1-3 (Wildstorm)
Written by Andy Diggle / Penciled by Leinil Francis Yu, inked by Gerry Alanguilan, colored by Dave Stewart
Samurai stories are awesome. They’re even more awesome when they take place in the future. Renjiro is the lieutenant of a major division of the yakuza. When he’s murdered for treason, a shadowy organization brings him back to life with a new robotic body. From there he’s left with a choice to either serve his new masters and take down his old gang, or take down those who turned him into the monstrosity he has become. But is it possible for him to do both? The story is full of action and cool visuals. The art is, of course, well-crafted and spectacular looking. It’s up to issue three now, so find it if you can!
Does it make me want to pick up the next issue? Yes!
MUTATION #1 (Speakeasy Comics)
Written by George T. Singley / Illustrated by Ethen Beavers, colored by Jaime Jones
I hate to bash people and their hard work, but I was sourly disappointed after spending my money on this book. It’s packed full of fight scenes with almost no dialogue throughout the whole issue. That wouldn’t be so bad, except I don’t know what the fuck is going on. Who are these people?!? It just all seems shallow and cheesy. And maybe that wouldn’t be so bad except for the fact that Mr. Beavers’ style looks like a carbon copy of Michael Avon Oeming (Powers). I mean exactly like Oeming’s style. Singley has stated in an interview that the second issue goes into actual characterization, but I think he\'s already lost me.
Does it make me want to pick up the next issue? I don’t like to be a jerk, but no.
