THE CINEMATICS – A STRANGE EDUCATION (TVT Records)

A nice combo of the kinds of retro melodies and sounds that make bands like the Killers, Ambulance LTD, and Franz Ferdinand so damn nice to listen to. Nearly guaranteed to be played in an endless loop on the radio in 2007.

RATING: FOUR STARS

WEIRD AL YANKOVIC – STRAIGHT OUTTA LYNWOOD (Volcano Records)

Say what you will about Weird Al but he has always been a reflection of the state of music. On Straight Outta Lynwood it’s pretty obvious that state is in sad shape. Only five of the songs are parodies – I assume because there is no real music out there in the mainstream anymore. The nice thing about this is that Weird Al gets a chance to show off what he’s really best at – original material. From the Rage Against the Machine style I’ll Sue Ya to the new holiday favorite, Weasel Stomping Day, Weird Al proves he doesn’t need to parody when he and his top-notch band have the chops to do it all themselves.

RATING: FOUR STARS

ALEX GREY: CHAPEL OF SACRED MIRRORS: COSM THE MOVIE (Docurama)

I’ve seen Alex Grey’s work for years. His anatomical, sometimes psychedelic, canvases are a maze of science and spirituality. This documentary is a personally guided tour through the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors gallery in New York. A gallery devoted almost entirely to Grey’s larger than life paintings. Needless to say I was very excited to hear more about his work until his mouth opened and out poured the most banal, eye-roll inducing new age blather. Grey simultaneously gives fine are and new ageism a bad name in the same breath. If you watched this with the sound off you might make it through. I lasted 11 minutes.
