BENEATH THE SKY ā WHAT DEMONS DO TO SAINTS (Victory Records)
This album sounds like a screaming dog over and over again, at least the vocals do. Actually, the instruments sound pretty dark and heavy and, well, good. Too bad the vocals make my throat hurt and ruin the album. Typical unoriginal metalcore.
RATING: ONE STAR
THE DIRTY NOVELS ā PACK YOUR PISTOLS (Hi-fi Recordings)
The Dirty Novels are nitty gritty garage rock that\'s also very good. Their songs are so sexy and gritty you might feel a little dirty afterwards. So don\'t forget your cigarettes.
RATING: FIVE STARS
THE DOLLYROTS ā BECAUSE IāM AWESOME (Blackheart Records)
The Dollyrots second album shows that the band has matured (but not too mature). The band serves up real pop punk nicely with fun, perky songs for our delights.
RATING: FIVE STARS
ILLINOIS ā WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW? (Ace Fu Records)
Illinois is not just your typical indie rock. The album has smooth melodies and catchy hooks galore with lightly humorous lyrics. My only complaint, Iām not too big on nasally vocals.
RATING: FOUR STARS
JESSIE AND LAYLA ā KINETIC (Second Shimmy)
Jessie and Layla are like sixties psychedelic music and today\'s electronica combined. This album contains both folky roots and pop thrown together and done well. Very nice and creative.
RATING: FOUR STARS
SIBERIAN ā HEY CELESTIAL (Sonic Boom Recordings)
Hey Celestial! is a soothing and pretty indie rock record. This album has many subtle and crisp melodies. The vocalist reminds me of Radiohead\'s frontman but thankfully not enough to make it seem like obvious copy.
RATING: FOUR STARS
Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Swati plays music that is direct and honest. She manages to somewhat stand apart from other singer, songwriter types, but is still pretty much what you would expect from that genre. Most of the songs have good melodies and some are more edgy, though sometimes it seems she\'s trying too hard to be edgy.
RATING: THREE STARS
