BILL CALLAHAN - WHOKE ON A WHALEHEART (Drag City)

I think Bill Callahan has one of the best voices in music. Seriously. This dude could sing the ingredient list on a box of hot pockets, and I\'d nominate it for a Grammy. Fortunately, he chooses to write his own tunes instead. The difference between these and his \"Smog\" albums? Let\'s just say, the \"Smog\" ones sound like black and white photographs. This one sounds like a thousand-color painting.

RATING: THREE STARS

LIFESAVAS - GUTTERFLY: THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK (Quannum)

One of the toughest-to-fuck-with acts out there base their second Quannum album on a blaxploitation film that never got finished, telling that tale, and their own, through characters created from the script. They lace their own trademark dusty-thick production with help from Oh No, Jake One, and Vitamin D, and invited Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Angelo Moore (Fishbone), dead prez, George Clinton, and countless others to co-star. Who in hiphop is gonna trump this in 2007?

RATING: FOUR STARS

MARIA MCKEE - LATE DECEMBER (Cooking Vinyl)

There are moments on this album that sound really fucking awesome, but mostly, it sounds like that chick who played \"Mary Catherine Gallagher\" on Saturday Night Live. Kinda looks like her, too.

RATING: ONE STAR
