Once upon a time there was an ogre named Shrek, who had no booty to call his own. I know what you’re thinking. “That’s a little crude for a kids’ movie.” But let me tell you, this is no kids’ movie. You’ve heard of kid movies that adults will also enjoy, but this is an adult movie that kids will also enjoy. Shrek is DreamWorks’ fifth animated film and by no means their last. How can it be with an all-star cast like Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow? Shrek is the tale of an ogre who sets out on a quest to save his swamp and ends up on an adventure rescuing a princess. This is a great movie. The voices give great depth to the characters and the animation gives a sense of reality to the film. The best part of Shrek is that the humor is very adult-oriented and will most likely go over kids’ heads. This is a good thing. Take John Lithgow’s character Lord Farquaad, for instance. Is it just me or does that sound a lot like “fuckwad?” They also take advantage of Eddie Murphy’s Donkey character and use “jackass” and “ass” at times. You have to love movies that push the limits like that. Shrek got a PG rating, but I’m guessing they were well on the way to a PG-13. They also do some great storytelling by including other fairy tale characters into the mix. Where else can you see Snow White bitch-slap Cinderella? There’s even a scene where Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) gets into a Matrix-esque fight with Robin Hood and his Merry Men. You have to see this movie, but only if you can go to a late show. The less kids, the better.
