SOME ACTION - EP

So, Insane Wayne Chinsang offered up this lil’ five-song EP, saying, "They sound like The Strokes." Though I’d had my suspicions before, after hearing Some Action, I know that, without a joke, Wayne doesn’t listen to The Strokes. And I’m willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that the lil’ Korean hatemonger is proud of that fact.
But I digress. Some Action, though not like The Strokes, does have a dirty little Seventies' punky New York sound going on. I bet back in the day they could’ve shared the stage with The Ramones and Blondie at CBGB’s.

THE WALKMEN - BOWS & ARROWS

The Walkmen's Bows & Arrows (Record Collection Music) opens with a soft, airy number called "What's In It For Me". Often, when you hear a track like that opening things up, you figure it's a preview for the rest of the album. On my work lunch break, listening to the CD on, appropriately enough, my Walkman, I even turned up the volume; so quiet and delicate was the first track.

VINYL - VINYL

Vinyl are the biggest thing to come out of Iceland since... well, folks, to be terribly honest, when it comes to geography, history, current events, math, and overall hygiene, I am fucked. But one thing I am certain of is this band is better than anything currently on the drivel that has become American radio.
The Icelandic rockers that make up Vinyl are Kristinn Júníusson on vocals, Egill Tómasson on guitar, Arnar Snær Davíðsson on bass, Þórhallur Bergmann on keyboard, and Guðlaugur Júníusson on drums.

TWEAKER - 2 A.M. WAKEUP CALL

It’s been a few years since we heard from tweaker (a.k.a. Chris Vrenna), but it’s been worth the wait. While the first tweaker disc, The Attraction To All Things Uncertain, was an amazing collection of sounds and loops, the result was a little unfocused. Nothing could be farther from the truth on 2 a.m. wakeup call-- a tighter, more mature older brother, if you will, to the first disc. The songs all revolve around a common theme: What keeps you awake at night?

TRANS AM - LIBERATION

THE BAND: Formed in 1993, the band consists of Nathan Means (bass/keyboards/vocals), Phil Manely (guitar/keyboards/bass/vocals), and Sebastian Thompson (drums/vocals/bass/guitar/programming).
THE MUSIC: I would like to start this review with an analogy I made up, because that's what I do when I am alone and the power goes out; I make up analogies and play naked chess.

THELONIOUS MONSTER - CALIFORNIA CLAM CHOWDER

I learned something new today: how to revitalize the dead. So, whatever evening plans we made, cancel them. I’ll be out back, summoning the heavens, calling forth the spirit of long-dead jazz genius, Thelonious Monk. I feel it’s only fair he be able to exact some sort of revenge upon a band who is casually raping his good name. And that’s what Thelonious Monster is doing-- nay, still doing-- raping.

MUNKEY JUICE - TEN UNDER SIXTY, VOLUME ONE

It\'s an A.D.D.-friendly musical venture-- ten songs, each under 60 seconds in length. The speed demons responsible? The incomparable sonic devils known as Munkey Juice. And while it may wear the mask of novelty, Minnesota\'s most prolific musical mavens make it otherwise by actually writing songs good enough to compete with any normal full-length out there.
Get \'em at their live shows.
