DEATH ON WEDNESDAY
review by neogeo the prophet

It wasn’t listening to the CD that was the problem. It was getting my damn stereo to work. But a trip across town and an application for a Target credit card solved that dilemma. When I finally got to listen to the Death On Wednesday CD, I threw a bunch of comparisons at what I heard. Thing was, I wasn’t far off. You see, I was telling the ol’ vincent baggaDEEZnuts that I thought D.O.W. sounded like a heavier Smoking Popes (who of course sound like a heavier version of The Smiths). Then I read the first two sentences of D.O.W.’s bio sheet: “Imagine Morrissey fronting Social Distortion,” and, “You might think of the bizarre lounge aesthetics of The Smoking Popes.” I was right on the money about these guys. Basically what you get in their newest release, Buying The Lie, is a solid sounding Orange County, California pop punk band that goes back a little to a heavier New York sound. Almost reminiscent of the East Coast’s own Life Of Agony.
