VARIOUS ARTISTS - PUNK-O-RAMA VOL. 9

Epitaph\'s Punk-O-Rama Vol. 9 is chock-full of great stuff from all three of their labels: Epitaph, Hellcat, and Burning Heart Records. You get tracks from classic punks, like the new Bad Religion tune \"Social Suicide\" and Rancid\'s \"Tropical London\". There\'s some hip-hop to stir things up by Atmosphere and Eyedea & Abilities. Then there\'s your basic pop-punkers, like Hot Water Music and Pennywise.

WHAT HE DID

Tommy was startled by his buddy, Mitch, grabbing his arm. \"Dude, let\'s go somewhere else,\" he said.
\"What? Why?\" Tommy had just turned 21 and was looking forward to legally buying alcohol. \"We just got here.\" Tommy followed his friend\'s nervous look into the bar. He spotted who Mitch was glaring at.
\"Come on, Tommy,\" said Mitch quietly, almost too quiet to hear amidst the crowd and music. \"We\'ll go to--\"
Tommy snapped his arm away from Mitch and stared into the bar. He was there. Son of a bitch. Tommy thought he\'d moved. Hadn\'t seen him since.

THE SUICIDE GIRLS - THE DOUBLE DOOR, CHICAGO

Having never seen a burlesque show-- all that we were familiar with was that ancient style of striptease you’d see in Warner Bros. cartoons-- we weren’t quite sure what to expect when we showed up at The Double Door. After all, this is the 21st Century. And The Suicide Girls are a badass bunch of hot chicks from the Internet, with tattoos, hair dye, and piercings. How would this play into our stereotyped image of parasols, coyly peeled-off gloves, and breasts covered with hand fans?

SCOTT COHEN - DON’T YOU JUST HATE THAT?

I’ve been reading for roughly 23 years of my life. In that time, I’ve come to know a lot of books. Hell, at one point, I even got a job at a bookstore. I learned so much about what’s out there, including a small niche of books that fall into a category I can’t appropriately label. You could say \"gimmick\", but that’d be unfair to the ones that are actually good. Like this one, from America’s sweetheart, Scott Cohen.

THANK GOD I'M POOR

See that giant bad idea up there? You can chalk that one up to Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY). He’s sincerely considering sponsoring legislation in our beloved Senate to have Alexander Hamilton’s presidential mug bumped for that of our newest dead prez, Ronald Reagan.
But, let’s be fair. The House of Representatives is dropping just as much acid in their sessions. Representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) wants to put Reagan\'s face on the twenty-dollar bill.
No, I’m not kidding. This is 21st Century Capitol Hill we’re talking about; the greatest show on Earth.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - POOR BOY: THE SONGS OF NICK DRAKE

The music of Nick Drake is beautiful and inspired. Reintroduced to new generations through a Volkswagen commercial featuring the song \"Pink Moon\", Nick Drake’s folksy melancholia proved to be timeless. Possibly the best of the folk singers, it’s wonderful that Drake is finally getting the respect he deserves.
Unfortunately, that also means that someone will release a tribute album. As most people know, tribute albums are usually not very good, suffering from problems of uneven quality in both performance and interpretation.

PIDGEON - FROM GUTTER WITH LOVE

With a nice blend of The Breeders, Pixies, and Sonic Youth, San Francisco’s Pidgeon have created a great noise-pop album called From Gutter With Love.
Pidgeon is sure to get you moving, starting with the powerful \"The Second One\", whose chorus goes from bloodcurdling scream to pop melody in a way that makes you smile... and then punch nuns. It doesn’t let up from beginning to end.
And though there are a couple songs in the middle that seem a little too much of the same, From Gutter With Love is still a damn good disc worthy of your time.

SECRET CHIEFS 3 - BOOK OF HORIZONS

Those who believed Mike Patton to be the brains behind Mr. Bungle should look no further than Secret Chiefs 3\'s fourth album, Book Of Horizons, to be proven otherwise. Secret Chiefs 3, lead by Bungle\'s Trey Spruance, continues to defy classification or logic, but somehow it all works. Imagine an Ennio Morricone surf band with Middle Eastern tunings.

FREAK FILMS: WAKING LIFE

Although Richard Linklater has recently done more commercial films like School Of Rock, his roots clearly lie in the realm of Freak Films. For those of us (such as myself) who enjoy hearing people philosophize about the meaning of life, movies like the recent Coffee And Cigarettes are intoxicating. Sadly, however, for many people, the idea of a film containing nothing but talking heads is not interesting-- they need tits and explosions.
