GODS, GUNS, GAYS, AND ABORTION

The People loved The Candidate because he stood for what was Right. He was a man of conviction, resolute regardless of dissent, never flipping nor flopping. All The People at the National Rifle Association rally believed in their man, save for one teenage girl who traveled across two red states and two blue states to see him.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - GIVE 'EM THE BOOT IV

To paraphrase Sinatra: \"When I was 19 / It was a very good year / It was a very good year / For punk rock boys / And their rude girlfriends / With five dollars to spend.\"
What, you never heard that verse? Oh, trust me. It was there. He wrote it right before he died, because he couldn’t stop listening to and thinking about HellCat Records\' inaugural and incomparable introductory compilation, Give \'Em The Boot I. It’s all Old Blue Eyes listened to.

CHALI 2NA - FISH MARKET

If you like Jurassic 5, and had the pleasure of bearing witness to Ozomatli in their self-titled album lineup days, you can’t not like Chali 2na. He’s the big, booming baritone voice passing out metaphors like Halloween candy. He can fill the mic with playfulness, or \"don’t fuck with us\"-ness. And he adds an equal sixth of incomparable charisma to the J5 live show.

THE SLOW SIGNAL FADE - THROUGH THE OPAQUE AIR

Through The Opaque Air is a fitting title for the six-song EP by The Slow Signal Fade. The soaring vocals of Marguerite Olivelle cut through the fog of reverb-soaked guitars and plodding bass lines in a way that reminds me of The Cranberries, with touches of Miranda Sex Garden. A dark, moody callback to the halcyon days of This Mortal Coil and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
The Slow Signal Fade sounds most like Switchblade Symphony to me, though, so if you’re a big fan of Switchblade’s blend of mood and atmosphere, you owe it to yourself to see what these guys are all about.

READING BETWEEN THE PANELS

Ex Machina: Essentially, dude becomes grafted with some alien/magic device that allows him to telepathically communicate with any and all machines. Dude becomes NYC superhero, but quickly retires figuring he can do more good in other ways. Dude reveals his identity and becomes Mayor of NYC. Series begins at the beginning of his first term.

BEASTIE BOYS - PATRIOT CENTER, FAIRFAX

Somehow, I managed to underestimate the Beastie Boys. It might have been the two-hour traffic jam that I encountered on D.C.\'s outer Beltway on the way to the show, or the fact that I left for the show just an hour or so after teaching chemistry all day. Needless to say, when I finally got to the point where I was at my seat and the show began, I was slightly unimpressed.
