CLASH OF THE TITANS

What is Clash of the Titans? Only the biggest charity event of the year. Mr. Show’s Bob Odenkirk put the whole event together to raise money for the McCarton School and UCSB Autism Research Center. The night was a huge success: the show sold out, and the two-and-a-half hours of comedy was top notch. The night was hosted by Mr. Show’s Paul F. Tompkins, and started with Mr. Show performing all new skits. And they ended their set with my favorite skit, "Hail Satan".

ASH WEDNESDAY

Ed Burns latest film, Ash Wednesday, is a far cry from his earlier work (Brothers McMullen & She's The One). In his earlier films, Burns let the dialogue carry the picture. In Ash Wednesday, he focused less on the dialogue and more on the story, which is about the Irish Mob in 1983. This movie seems more like Burns' version of Road To Perdition, and less like the type of film we've come to expect from him. His last film, Sidewalks Of New York, had a Woody Allen feel to it, and also did poorly at the box office.

GUNS N' ROSES

I had never been to a Guns N’ Roses concert before. I played the shit out of Appetite for Destruction-- until I saw the “Welcome to the Jungle” video. Hated them ever since. Never thought I would care about them again. Then Axl reforms the band with Robin Finck from Nine Inch Nails, and Buckethead. I'm sure most of you know who Buckethead is by now. It used to be that only a handful of people knew who Buckethead was, and we liked it that way. Never in a million years did we think he would join a band

VOICE FROM THE LONGBOX

There is an old joke about choosing between working retail, or having a nail driven through your hand. And, unfortunately, as we carom down the calendar toward the Christmas holiday season, I'm feeling more like Venom than Spider-Man.
I've always considered myself to be extremely patient and accommodating. I love my job, and I love interacting with my customers. However, there’re a few misconceptions that need to be addressed.
For starters: “The customer is always right.”

DAVID CROSS: SHUT UP, YOU FUCKING BABY!

You may know David Cross from Mr. Show or Scary Movie 2. But did you know that he has a two-disc comedy CD out right now? I bet you didn't! Well, he does, and it's called, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! Last year David went on tour doing stand-up all over the country. While on tour he recorded this album. What fun! Anyone that has ever laughed before will enjoy this album, because it makes you laugh again and again. That's what comedy albums do, you know! And how could you go wrong with tracks like "Spider-Man vs. Batman vs.

FREAK FILMS: BEGOTTEN

Spilling from the stocking of strangeness for your holiday enjoyment is 1991's Begotten. Begotten is a 78-minute creation myth nightmare directed by E. Elias Merhige, who nine years later made Shadow of the Vampire. The movie is shot on ultra-grainy black-and-white film that was reportedly developed in Merhige's own bathtub. The film is not easy to explain or watch. We open with a shrouded figure, credited as "God killing himself", cutting open his stomach with a straight razor for 15 minutes.

CAP'N BOOTY'S TOYBOX

No Christmas special quite compares to the stop-motion treat Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Sadly, really good toys based on the movie were never created-- until now. Once again, Playing Mantis, the people who brought you the Peanuts toys, have taken a classic TV show and made some really cool action figures. My favorite of the new collection has to be good old Yukon Cornelius and his dog sled team. This is an amazing set with wonderfully sculpted touches. First, there's Yukon himself. What a cool figure! He has his trademark blue jacket and snow pants, red hat, and yellow earmuffs.

THE STREETS

I know one thing about Mike Skinner: music industry types and dumb critics are selling him as "the British Eminem." But that's a bunch of fucking bollocks. Mike's got a totally different bag than ol' Mr. Mathers. Mike's bag is less bitter. And WAY more British. To a point where you can't really understand what the hell he's saying, unless you:
a) Are from England, or
b) Have lived there.

EIGHT CRAZY NIGHTS

I recently went to the premier of Adam Sandler's new cartoon movie, Eight Crazy Nights. At the beginning of some of these promo screenings they have little contests to give away free awful shit that studios produce to sell the movie. You know how people freak out when someone says, "Free t-shirt!" It's akin to someone saying, "Excuse me everyone. The planet is about to explode, and this is the entry way to the only ship on Earth that can save you. So please line up orderly. The first 25 people will survive, and the rest of you will suffer an agonizing death.
